Cavities are one of the most common dental problems. They are caused by tooth decay, which occurs when bacteria in your mouth produce acids that eat away at your tooth enamel. During these appointments, your dentist will conduct an oral exam to assess the health of your gums and teeth. They will also clean the teeth to remove any plaque buildup that may lead to cavities. This preventative care can help protect your teeth and decrease the likelihood you’ll need fillings in the future.

How Is Tooth Decay Treated?

A cavity is a hole in the tooth caused by decay, bacteria, and acid. Once a hole forms in the enamel of the tooth, it needs to be treated with a dental filling. The procedure is typically painless and quick. The dentist numbs the tooth, and the decayed portion is removed with a drill or laser. Then, a special resin mixture is used to fill the space where the tooth decay existed to prevent more bacteria from entering the body through the mouth. Finally, the filling is placed on top of the tooth and smoothed down to lock it in place. Patients can usually return to their normal activities after the procedure for filling a cavity. However, the teeth may still be sensitive for a few days following the treatment.

A dentist can provide a filling material that meets the patient’s needs and preferences. If the individual is having pain or discomfort caused by a cavity, they can get a filling to prevent further damage to the tooth and surrounding tissue.
